| If you're new to South
Carolina or planning to move here the following is general
information about your car or truck from the Department of
Motor Vehicles.
If you purchase a new or used vehicle
or move to South Carolina from another state, you must apply
for a new vehicle title and registration. It is important
to note that South Carolina will only issue a certificate
of title for a vehicle that is physically located in South
Carolina.
Vehicles must be registered every two years. Passenger vehicle
registrations are renewed every other year in the month you
first registered your vehicle in South Carolina. A renewal
sticker will be issued each year after you pay your property
taxes. You may renew your vehicle registration through the
mail when you pay your property taxes. For more information
visit the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicle website
at www.scdmvonline.com.
If you're new to North Carolina or
planning a move to North Carolina the following general information
about your car or truck is from the North Carolina Department
of Motor Vehicles.
In the case of new residents, you must register your motor
vehicle at the expiration of the time granted by reciprocity
agreement between North Carolina and your prior state of residence
(usually 30 days) or when gainful employment is accepted,
whichever occurs first. For more information see the North
Carolina Department of Transportation website at www.ncdot.org.
How Does South Carolina Law Affect Your Auto Insurance
Choices?
In South Carolina, state law requires all drivers to be financially
responsible for any damaged caused by their cars. Purchasing
liability insurance is the most common way to comply with
this law. In addition, state law requires you to keep proof
of insurance with you at all times and show it to law enforcement
officers if they ask to see it. As an alternative, some drivers
may qualify to pay a $550 annual fee to drive without insurance
(subject to certain requirements). this fee does not cover
your costs if you have an accident; it simply means you can
legally drive your care without insurance. If an accident
is your fault, you are still responsible for the injuries
or damages you cause.
What Auto Insurance Coverages Are Required?
Liability and Uninsured Motorist coverages at minimum limits
of $15,000/$30,000/$10,000 are required by law.
- Liability coverage pays for damage to other people and
their property.
- Uninsured Motorist coverage protects you if you have an
accident with an at-fault uninsured driver.
